Why work?

1- Working is a big part of the ProStart program. By working you get real world work experience that relates to and reinforces what you learn in the classroom.

2- If you want to earn the Certificate of Achievement award, you are required to work a minimum of 400 hours in the food service and restaurant industry.

3- Working will give you a head start toward a career in the restaurant and food service industry or in continuing your education at a college or a university.

What about working in school?
You can get up to 150 of the required 400 hours of work experience in school. If your ProStart class caters special events or prepares and sells food for fund raisers, the hours you spend count. Just make sure your teacher keeps track of your hours.

Need help applying for a job?
Check out this other great link for assistance with resumes, applications and other job skills.

Be sure to include the fact that you’re a ProStart student on your resume, on applications and in interviews. Say something like: “I’m enrolled in the ProStart program. ProStart is a culinary arts and restaurant management class for high school students that was developed by the National Restaurant Association.”

Letters of Confirmation
Students in the ProStart program can receive a letter from the President and CEO of the Hospitality Association of South Carolina confirming their enrollment in the ProStart program.

When you’re ready to look for a job, let your ProStart teacher know so your personal Letter of Confirmation can be prepared and sent to you. This is like a letter of recommendation. Attach this letter to your job application and your future employer will be impressed!
